A client approached me the other day and mentioned they were a bit anxious about their coaching as they had heard their boss talk about ‘Cliffs and Strengths’ all week. They thought we were going to spend the session talking about their weaknesses. While it made me laugh, console them and clarify it was ‘CliftonStrengths’, it made me really stop and think about the impact of that experience.
In the quest for personal and professional growth, conventional wisdom often tells us to identify and improve upon our weaknesses. We're encouraged to turn our attention to the areas where we fall short, striving to bridge the gaps in our skill sets. However, a growing body of research (most notably from Gallup) suggests a different approach—one that emphasises the cultivation and utilisation of our strengths.
Below, I’ll delve into why focusing on strengths is more important than fixating on weaknesses.
The Gallup Strengths Perspective
Gallup, renowned for their research and analytics uses the CliftonStrengths assessment to identify an individual's top talents and provides insights into how these strengths can be leveraged for personal and professional success.
According to Gallup, individuals who use their strengths daily are six times more likely to be engaged in their work and three times more likely to report having an excellent quality of life.
Playing to Your Strengths
One of the most compelling arguments for focusing on strengths is the simple fact that we excel when we operate within our areas of natural talent.
Just as a plant thrives in the right soil and sunlight, we flourish when we're allowed to lean into what we do best. By honing our strengths, we can become more confident, productive, and fulfilled individuals, who get to bring the best of ourselves everyday.
The Power of Positive Psychology
Positive psychology, a branch of psychology that emphasises strengths, virtues, and optimal human functioning, underscores the importance of cultivating what's right with us rather than dwelling on what's wrong. When we focus on our strengths, we foster a positive mindset and a sense of empowerment. Instead of feeling burdened by our weaknesses, we channel our energy into activities that bring us joy and fulfillment.
Building Resilience and Growth
Contrary to popular belief, focusing on strengths doesn't mean ignoring areas where we can improve. Rather, it's about building upon our existing foundation of strengths to navigate challenges and pursue growth opportunities.
When we approach self-improvement from a strengths-based perspective, we're more resilient in the face of setbacks and more adaptable in a rapidly changing world.
Creating High-Performing Teams
When we talk about team dynamics, the principles of strengths-based development are equally relevant. By understanding and valuing each team member's strengths, leaders can foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
When individuals are encouraged to contribute in ways that align with their strengths, teams become stronger, more cohesive, and more successful.
Embracing Diversity and Inclusion
Focusing on strengths also has profound implications for diversity and inclusion efforts. By recognising and celebrating the unique talents and perspectives that each individual brings to the table, organisations can create environments where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. In embracing diversity of strengths, we foster a culture of inclusivity and equity.
I read recently that for 70% of people, a manager has more impact on someone’s mental health than their therapist or doctor. This stat is equal to the impact of a partner. So, if we just spend all our time focusing on team’s weaknesses, shortcomings and inabilities – imagine that impact. It’s not going to be good, right?
We can create environments where people want to come to work, want to thrive and want to excel – and we can do that by creating a language of strengths, it’s really that easy!
